AT&T HTC One X will have free Dropbox space, company spokeswoman affirms

Dropbox on the HTC One X

The AT&T HTC One X has found itself in the hands of a few lucky Android Forums members, and some of the biggest questions poised have had to do with storage. Remember that the AT&T One X has 16 gigabytes of internal storage, whereas the international version has 32GB. Of course, HTC Sense 4 devices come with 25 gigabytes of free Dropbox storage (for two years).

Dropbox on HTC Sense 4Wait. Are we sure about that? There's been a little bit of concern about Dropbox on the AT&T One X. According to Clcross18x and VarsityHacker, who have been detailing their early looks at the AT&T One X in our forums, Dropbox isn't preinstalled on the device, as it is on the International One X and One S, and on T-Mobile's version of the One S.

Writes VarsityHacker:

The AT&T version doesn't have Dropbox as stated. I loaded Dropbox on the phone and then setup an account and have only 2.5 GBs of storage, not 25 GB's. AT&T's website doesn't mention anything about Dropbox in the phone description and I don't remember seeing anything on the AT&T box about Dropbox. I wonder if this deal is only for the international version?

And, sure enough, going back to AT&T's announcement of the One X, Dropbox isn't mentioned anywhere.

Put down the pitchforks, though. AT&T spokeswoman Jackie Vettorino has some good news, telling Android Central "HTC One X consumers will also get the 25 GB Dropbox storage as part of HTC Sense 4."

Repeat: The HTC One X will get the extra 25GB of Dropbox storage as part of HTC Sense 4

Partner that Dropbox space with what we've seen today from Google Drive (plus every other storage service out there), and things aren't looking quite so dire.

Diablo 3 beta throws open doors, this weekend only

Diablo 3, the much-anticipated fantasy game, is scheduled for launch in North America on May 15. In the meantime, you can get your hands on the?Diablo 3?beta version.

Diablo 3: One of the most eagerly-anticipated games in recent memory, and also one of the most frequently delayed. Horizons readers will remember that back in September of last year,?Blizzard announced that Diablo 3, originally slated to arrive in 2011, would be held until early 2012 ? enough time for the developer to polish up the gameplay.?

“[T]his week we pulled together people from all of the teams involved with the game to decide whether we felt it would be ready before the end of December, and we grudgingly came to the conclusion that it would not,” a Blizzard exec wrote at the time. “Ultimately, we feel that to deliver an awesome Diablo sequel that lives up to our expectations and yours as well, we should take a little more time and add further polish to a few different elements of the game.”

Since then, Blizzard has finalized a May 15 North America launch date for Diablo 3.?

This week comes news that Blizzard will stage an open beta event for Diablo 3, a kind of “stress test” for the forthcoming fantasy title. VentureBeat?reports?that the beta test will extend from Friday afternoon to 1 p.m. EST on Monday. Anyone with a valid?Battle.net account is invited to play (excepting folks in the?Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau markets, who are getting a separate beta event, on April 23).

You can get started here.?

Diablo 3, like Diablo 2 and the original Diablo, will take place in the the murky, shadowy world of Sanctuary. Among the playable character classes are the newly-introduced “monks” ? “priest-warriors who follow the divine injunctions of their Patriarchs, the rulers of Ivgorod,” according to Blizzard. Sounds like some good, geeky fun to us.?

Space Shuttle Discovery mounted on 747 for ride to Smithsonian (+video)

The retired Space Shuttle Discovery is now sitting on top of NASA’s modified jumbo jet, in preparation for its delivery to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

NASA mounted space shuttle Discovery on a jumbo jet Sunday (April 15), in preparation for the retired orbiter’s delivery to the Smithsonian. The paired air- and spacecraft are expected to depart Florida for Washington, D.C., on Tuesday morning (April 17), weather permitting.

Skip to next paragraph The Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off for the last time on February 24, 2011.

Discovery’s mating to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft?(SCA), NASA’s modified Boeing 747 jetliner, came a day later than the space agency had planned. On Saturday,?wind gusts?at the Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility set the 167,000 pound (75,300 kilogram) Discovery swaying under its lift sling, posing a risk that it could impact the Mate Demate Device (MDD), the gantry-like steel structure used to hoist the shuttle onto the jetliner.

Workers reconvened at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 GMT) on Sunday, to finish retracting the shuttle’s landing gear. They then raised the orbiter 60 feet (18 meters) off the ground so that the carrier aircraft could be positioned underneath. Discovery was then lowered onto the jumbo jet’s three protruding attach points to achieve a “soft” mating.

Work continued throughout the day Sunday to secure, or “hard” mate, Discovery to the 747, before removing the hoist sling and backing the paired vehicles out of the MDD on Monday morning. [How Space Shuttles Fly on 747 Jets (Photos)]

“Assuming the weather is good, we’ll back out [of the Mate-Demate Device] in the morning, That will give a whole day of opportunity for the media, the public, and for our employees to come out and get a good view of Discovery’s last time on top of a 747 here at Kennedy Space Center,” said Stephanie Stilson, flow director for the transition and retirement for the space shuttle orbiters. [Gallery: Discovery Mated to Jumbo Jet]

Among the space program workers expected to come out and view Discovery on Monday are the members of its 39th and final spaceflight, the six astronauts who flew the STS-133 mission in March 2011.

According to Stilson, who also led the ground processing for Discovery’s last 11 missions, seeing it be readied for one last ferry flight was eliciting mixed feelings.

“It’s hard not to be happy, because we have achieved another one of our goals,” Stilson told collectSPACE.com. “That is how we look at things. We have a job to do, and that is to get?Discovery to the Smithsonian. So this is the next step to get there. So we’re very happy because everything has gone well to get to this point.”

Egypt?s shaky finances: Can the IMF and government agree on a loan deal?

The IMF wants assurances that the political leaders who emerge to run Egypt after elections next month will be on board with the financial requirements underpinning a proposed $3.2 billion loan.

The International Monetary Fund is moving closer to approving a multibillion-dollar loan to help Egypt shore up its shaky finances, but the failure of some emerging political players in the Arab Spring country to endorse the plan is holding up a final agreement.

Egyptians vote next month in the first presidential election since the fall of Hosni Mubarak last year. And the IMF wants assurances that the political leaders who emerge to run the country will be on board with the financial requirements underpinning a proposed $3.2 billion loan.

On the other hand, some Egyptians and international financial experts are asking if it is even appropriate for a lame-duck military government to complete a deal that ties the hands of a future government.

The issue of Egypt and, more broadly, the Arab Spring countries, will be a chief concern of the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank this weekend in Washington. The question is: How does the global financial community follow through on its commitment to help them on the road of reform?

In December, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said her institution had set aside $35 billion for loans to help shore up the Arab countries in transition. But since then, concerns about commitments to reform and questions about leaders? ability to hold up their end of a deal have held up agreements.

As Ms. Lagarde said at a Washington press conference Thursday, the IMF ?stands ready [and] will help each of those [Arab Spring] countries,? but she said the countries would also have to adhere to the IMF?s rules to get the loans.

?With IMF programs, it takes two to tango, right?? she said.

In the case of Egypt, the wise thing might seem to be to wait for the new government to emerge, given the doubts about future support for a loan. But the problem is that Egypt?s finances and economy are deteriorating now, and fast: The country?s foreign reserves have shrunk by more than half, tourism has plummeted, unemployment has jumped ? and as a result, Egypt needs an infusion of as much as $12 billion from public and private sources to stabilize its finances, experts say.

The IMF has two basic conditions for extending loans Lagarde says: First, the IMF must have negotiated with authorities an economic plan that will ?actually help that country pull itself out of the difficulty it is in?; and second, there must be ?broad political support in the country? for the loan program.

Until recently, the Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party, which emerged as a dominant political force in parliamentary elections several months ago, opposed any IMF package, but party leaders appear to have switched to favoring the loan. That endorsement has helped fuel renewed optimism among IMF officials that a loan the organization had hoped to agree on with Egypt in March can still be concluded this month.

On Friday, Masood Ahmed, IMF Middle East director, said prospects for a deal with Egypt were brightening. ?We feel there is some progress in terms of getting a commitment and broad buy-in to the objectives and the measures? of a loan program, he said.

Concluding a loan with Egypt would be a good signal to the region, he added, which he said continues to experience a slowdown in economic growth as a result of the repercussions of political upheaval and the effects of Europe?s debt crisis.

Netflix Q1 results: 3 million new streaming subscribers worldwide, record viewing hours

Netflix Q1 2012 earnings

Netflix has posted its earnings report for Q1 of 2012, and reveals its streaming subscriber count in the US is currently 23.4 million, after reaching 21.67 million back in January. While the company noted a net loss of about $5 million, the letter from CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells claimed it is still on a “rapid return” to profitability after last year’s missteps and international expansions. Worldwide it now counts a total of 26 million subscribers to the streaming service, although it lost another million or so subscribers to discs, which currently number 10.09 million. That old disc business is still highly profitable however, adding $146 million to the bottom line. Internationally, Netflix added more customers in its first three months of UK / Ireland availability than it did in the same period for Latin America or Canada, and expects its Canadian service to be profitable a quarter earlier than expected.

Reed Hastings also took the opportunity to toss another barb at Comcast for its bandwidth cap-exempt Xfinity TV Xbox 360 app, claiming it should either raise its caps, make them apply to all services including its own or eliminate them entirely. Another development in Q1 was the loss of streaming titles from Starz but it claims that caused no discernible change in viewing or subscriber hours, while customers continue to lean towards streaming TV episodes over movies. Hit the source links below to paw through the PDF and spreadsheet for yourself, we’ll let you know if any interesting tidbits are revealed on the earnings call later today.

‘Dark Knight Rises’ Third Trailer To Premiere With ‘Avengers’

‘Knight’ will also have the most IMAX footage of any Hollywood movie.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Marvel and DC Comics fans are in for quite a treat. Not only will “Marvel’s The Avengers” finally release in theaters on May 4, but it was confirmed over the weekend that DC Comics’ “The Dark Knight Rises” third trailer will debut when Earth’s mightiest heroes ban together.

A Warner Bros. executive told Deadline Hollywood, “We see this placement as a good strategic decision. We always want our trailers to be seen with films that people want to see — and a lot of people will be going to ‘The Avengers’!”

Warner Bros.’ idea of placing a DC Comics trailer in front of a Marvel film isn’t new. In 2008, a third trailer for “The Dark Knight” played before “Iron Man.” It would seem a little strange since Marvel and DC are rivals, but it’s all a marketing strategy. “It will provide the best potential exposure for ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ ” the studio exec said. “It’s a big positive for everyone!”

We know comic fans are certainly not complaining. And that’s not all they have to look forward to when it comes to Christopher Nolan‘s final Batman flick. The Wall Street Journal also reported that “The Dark Knight Rises” will contain the most IMAX footage ever featured in a Hollywood film. “The Dark Knight” had 40 minutes of IMAX footage when it released in 2008, but the 2012 follow-up will have more than an hour’s worth. It may seem like IMAX is nothing to get excited over, with “The Avengers,” “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “Prometheus” all slated to hit IMAX screens this summer as well. The difference is Nolan’s film was shot with an actual IMAX camera, whereas the others are simply being converted by IMAX’s technology.

The 90-pound, incredibly noisy IMAX camera has proved to be difficult for some directors, but it didn’t faze Nolan. “There was a huge irony that we were told it would be too difficult to shoot a Hollywood movie on IMAX when we had this gigantic camera department, grips, electric, hundreds of people working for us,” the director told WSJ. “These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn’t make a feature film. It was absurd.”

Audiences can see the third trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” during the “Avengers” previews on May 4, before the Batman epic releases on July 18, 2012.

How would you change the Jawbone Up?

Image

Ordinarily, we’d be dismissive if you answered that question with “Doy, make it work!” but in the special case of the Jawbone Up, it’s entirely apt. The wristband promised plenty of technological advances that would track your sleep, calories burned and diarize your food intake, all within the confines of a slender cord wrapped around your wrist. The downside? A significant proportion of the units conked out days after being opened, forcing the company to offer no-questions-asked refunds and halt production. So, what we want to know is: do you have a working Up? Does it still work? Do you like it? If Hosain Rahman was reading the comments below, how would you suggest he goes about fixing things?

Sprint discontinues HTC EVO 3D online, limited quantities remain at retail stores

Sprint discontinues HTC EVO 3D online, limited quantities remain at retail stores

It’s not like we’re gonna argue with Sprint’s rationale, but the EVO 3D has met its end at the Now Network. Visitors to the carrier’s online store will notice that the gee-whiz smartphone is no longer available for sale, and Sprint reps have confirmed to us that it’s not coming back. Those who insist on owning an EVO 3D will be glad to know that the handset is still available at Sprint’s retail outlets, but according to the carrier, quantities are rather limited. Given a phone that debuted less than a year ago, its abrupt and unceremonious demise comes as a bit of a shock, but with the mighty EVO 4G LTE on the horizon, we can’t blame the carrier one bit.
